This document is designed to be of practical use for staff in schools and early years' settings in preparing for, and handling and recovering from, critical incidents, such as a stabbing on a school site, a fire, or a flood.
It is not designed to cover every eventuality, but to provide tools to allow each school and early years setting to be well prepared to handle critical incidents, and to minimise their occurrence and their impact.
This document will help to ensure that:
- Procedures are in place before critical incidents occur, ensuring that they can be dealt with effectively
- Staff, children and young people are kept safe
- Rapid and appropriate action is taken
- Accurate information is provided
- Normal routines are maintained as far as possible; and
- Immediate, sensitive and non-intrusive support is offered as appropriate
What is a critical incident?
Critical incident describes any occurrence, which constitutes a major disruption arising with little or no warning on a scale beyond the coping capacity of the school operating under normal conditions.
