Barking and Dagenham's new 101 telephone number for non-emergency incidents is to be extended to March 2009, the Council has announced today.
The Greater London Authority has chosen to extend the pilot scheme in the borough because of the Council's commitment to providing excellent and innovative customer services.
Residents can call the 101 number 24 hours a day to obtain advice, information and action for community safety matters, including certain non-emergency crimes such as vandalism and graffiti, noise nuisance and threatening and abusive behaviour.
Councillor Shaun Carroll, Executive Member for Customer Services, said:
"We are delighted that residents can continue to report non-emergency antisocial behaviour crimes by calling the 101 number.
"This 24-hour service means residents can report incidents and get the support they need for their problems no matter the time.
"During the hot summer months when residents tend to experience more problems with late night parties and antisocial behaviour, I urge residents to remember the single non emergency number and telephone 101 to report problems".
The 101 service is for reporting antisocial behaviour and does not replace the 999 emergency service or Barking and Dagenham Direct, the Council's Call Centre, which can be contacted on 020 8215 3000.
The new hotline was launched earlier this year for residents living in Barking and Dagenham and Waltham Forest to give them 24-hour access to report minor antisocial behaviour issues. Calls to the 101 number cost a flat rate of 10p per call. Residents can also report problems online.
While access to the 101 is 24-hours, some services are not currently delivered around the clock - for example, graffiti removal or fly-tipping. Callers will be informed of what level of service to expect in response to their call.
The 101 number, initially a 6-month pilot project, has been extended to March 2009. Due to the Council's commitment to providing excellent customer services and innovative ideas in customer services delivery it has been chosen by the Greater London Authority to trial this service in the run up to the London Olympics.
