Affordable homes plan nears completion

Local people could soon be making the most of 8,000 more affordable homes, thanks to a landmark deal between Barking and Dagenham Council and 2 private developers.

The Council is expected to become the first authority in the country to work out a brand new funding deal, which will be known as the Barking and Dagenham Local Housing Company.

Thirteen other councils are also trying to work out their own local housing company plans, but Barking and Dagenham's scheme is believed to be closest to completion.

The Council is currently in the final stage of negotiations with a major contractor, and hopes to make a firm announcement by the end of May. If successful, builders could start working on the borough's first new local housing company development as soon as June.

The recently cleared Lintons site in Barking will be the first site to be developed and, if plans go through, it could soon boast more than 500 new homes, around half of which will be affordable.

Current Barking and Dagenham residents are set to be the scheme's biggest benefactors, as the local housing company will allow up to 8,000 much-needed new homes, priced within their reach, to be built across the borough.
