Barking and Dagenham Council Leader Charles Fairbrass MBE was presented with the Olympic flag in a special ceremony to mark the handover of the games from Beijing to London last Sunday.
The event took place at Barking Town Square on Sunday 24 August 2008 and saw the famous 5 ring logo flown at Barking Town Hall for the first time ever.
Councillor Fairbrass said:
"The past couple of weeks in Beijing have shown just what a unifying force sport can be for people from all corners of the globe. In 2012, just a stones-throw away from here, the eyes of the world will be on London.
It is a great honour and a huge responsibility, but one I am confident London can shoulder successfully to provide a hospitable and memorable experience for all."
All across London flags were raised at 2.30pm approximately the same time as the main Olympic flag was handed to London Mayor Boris Johnson in Beijing.
Also invited to join Councillor Fairbrass were a number of talented sporting youngsters from across the borough who are hoping to being part of Team GB come the 2012 Olympics in London.
The flag will fly at the Town hall until the start of the Paralympics, when it will move to the Civic Centre.
Tuesday 26 August 2008.
