Barking and Dagenham's roads are set to receive a major facelift as part of a £20m council improvement scheme. The radical initiative will see major work undertaken to improve areas requiring the most attention.
The Highways Improvement Campaign is part of a concerted council drive to enhance the living environment of residents across the borough in full consultation with residents.
Councillor Milton McKenzie, Executive Member for Highways, said:
"This is a very exciting project for the borough. We are all aware that certain areas of our highways infrastructure require improvements and repairs. As an authority we are committed to addressing these issues and giving residents the kind of road network and living environment they deserve."
Residents living in areas targeted by the Highways Improvements Campaign will be invited to comment on what improvements they would like to see.
Thousands of leaflets will be distributed to households for residents to fill in and return to the Council. In addition, a series of open days will take place where residents living in targeted areas will be able to come along to a community centre to speak to council highways experts and return their consultation forms.
David Woods, the council's Director of Customer Services, said:
"This is an extremely important project both for the Council and residents. The views of residents are vital to its success, and as such we have made every effort in making sure their views are easily conveyed and carefully assessed. Naturally we will not be able to respond to each and every request for improvements, but where we can deliver, we will."
