National Holocaust Memorial Day

Sunday 27 January 2008

National Holocaust Memorial Day 2008 will be commemorated by Barking and Dagenham Council on Monday 28 January 2008 at the Peace and Memorial Garden, adjacent to the Civic Centre, Dagenham.

This year the international theme of the day is 'Imagine, remember, reflect, react'. The focus of the ceremony will be the planting, at 12 noon, of a tree by students who will be representing Barking and Dagenham in March 2008 when they visit the infamous Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps in Krakow, Poland.

The 9 sixth form students will also take the opportunity to visit the Wieliczka salt mine, the Old Synagogue and Pod Orlem Museum also in Krakow.

Councillor Charles Fairbrass MBE, Leader of the Council, said:

"This will be an opportunity for local students to learn first hand what Holocaust victims went through.

"It is always important to remember those who died in these camps and to understand how they suffered. We feel this is the most powerful way that local students can learn about this part of history."

Following the planting ceremony, guests will gather in the Civic Centre council chamber where there will be a reading of letters from camp survivors and a showing of a short film produced by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

This special day also commemorates victims from all countries who have suffered or died through the act of genocide.

Holocaust Memorial Day, which is officially commemorated on Sunday 27 January 2008, is recognised worldwide and was established to commemorate the millions of people who perished in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany due to their faith, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or political belief.

Exhibition at the Barking Learning Centre

Holocaust Memorial Week will be acknowledged with a special exhibition starting from Tuesday 5 February 2008 at the Barking Learning Centre. The exhibition will focus on the experiences of both Jewish and non-Jewish victims of the Nazi regime.

The exhibition will look at how Germany has faced up to its past with Holocaust inspired paintings by artist Paul Winner and a series of photographs by Marion Davies. There will also be readings on the experiences of victims.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day - Imagine: remember, reflect, react - is a challenge to us all to imagine the unimaginable. It asks us to focus on the lives and experience of victims and survivors of the Holocaust, of Nazi persecution and of other genocides.
