The council's housing team has some new helping hands in the form of six apprentices who will be learning the ropes for the next year.
The team are getting used to their new roles after starting work last month. The youngsters will get on-the-job first hand experience in a variety of jobs, including graffiti removal, horticulture, deep cleaning and painting and decoration. They will also get to try their hands at weed spraying, and minor repair work, plus gaining a grounding in first aid, health and safety and manual lifting.
Outside the workplace they will also study one day a week in the classroom at Frizlands Learning Centre in Rainham Road North. They will also have the chance of further training at the College of North East London.
Each apprentice is assigned a "buddy" who will mentor them and give support throughout the year.
Cllr Phil Waker, cabinet member for housing, and Cllr Mick McCarthy, cabinet member for regeneration, including apprentices, met the new intake last week in Dagenham Road.
Cllr Waker said: "I would like to welcome our new group of apprentices to the housing team. I am pleased that we are giving local young people this opportunity and it is already clear that they will be a real asset to the council, learning some very valuable skills along the way."
Cllr McCarthy added: "As a council we're very proud of our commitment to recruit as many apprentices as possible. It is an excellent way to not only provide jobs for our young people, but also to equip them with the skills they need to have long and successful working lives."
