Community Music Service instrumental tutors visit each school weekly to provide instrumental lessons as outlined in the Community Music Service Instrumental Teaching Policy. Some schools provide Wider Opportunities music programmes which enables whole classes to learn an instrument.
Instruments taught in Primary Schools are: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba violin, viola, cello and mini double bass. Additional percussion instruments:- African and Latin percussion may be involved in whole class lessons through the Wider Opportunities programmes.
Instruments taught in Secondary schools are: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba violin, viola, cello and mini double bass and piano, keyboard, percussion, drum kit, guitar, bass guitar, steel pans and singing.
Applying for instrument/vocal lessons in schools:
Pupils who apply are then auditioned by the instrumental teacher.
The school will organise pupils to meet the instrumental teacher who will assess their suitability for the specific instrument. The assessment is based on physical suitability, basic musical understanding and enthusiasm/commitment.
