The Malthouse and adjacent buildings on Abbey Road, Barking are designated for use by the creative industries.

The newly refurbished warehouse is now home to both Studio 3 Arts and Arc Theatre, 2 of the borough's art organisations.

The Malthouse building and adjoining sites have been purchased by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation to expand the complex and include a large number of businesses and individuals working in the Creative Industries who collectively will contribute to the development of Barking as a Cultural Hub.

The Creative Industries are defined as those which involve intellectual property and ownership of ideas and include all forms of arts, design and crafts from idea to production and all individuals and businesses who make a living from their creative ideas and work.
