One hundred years of libraries in Barking

Alan Hill

1989

£1

This booklet looks back over the past 100 years and traces the history of the Library Service in the borough.

The year 1989 is an important milestone in the history of the public library service in the borough. We are celebrating the Centenary of what we believe was the first public library provided by a local authority in Essex.

This booklet looks back over the past 100 years at the achievements in providing an important public service. A brief account is also given of our present services which the library staff, in their various activities, are providing with energy and dedication.

The near future, with its uncertainties, is also considered, as to the ways in which the library service might develop in a changing society.
