Dagenham Pubs Past and Present

Tony Clifford

£2

A pictorial account of the Inns and Taverns in Dagenham.

Egbert Smart, a member of the staff of Dagenham Public Libraries, took many photographs of local scenes during the 1950s and 1960s, including pubs.

Many of his photographs appeared in the Dagenham Digest and the local press. Valence House has mounted contact prints and negatives of all his pictures, some of which have been used in this book.

Main sources of information have been deeds, annual registers of recognizances and sale catalogues at Essex Record Office and Valence Library.

Commercial directories such as Kelly's (Essex, 1851-1937) have been extremely useful for identifying landlords at particular times, although sometimes only the occupation is given as 'beer retailer', with no sign or precise address.

Local Council minutes have been useful for tracing some applications for the transfer of licences and the erection of new premises. Other general sources are mentioned in Barking Pubs Past and Present.
