Regeneration Strategy
In 2001, we published our first regeneration strategy, An Urban Renaissance in East London to improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of the borough. We have achieved a lot in the past 5 years, including:
- Beacon status for secondary education
- 1,500 new jobs at Dagenham Dock
- 938 affordable homes built
But we still have a lot of work to do. We need to make sure that local people have the same opportunities as the communities in our neighbouring boroughs, so we have updated our regeneration strategy to make sure that we get maximum benefit from:
- Being the borough next door to the 2012 Olympics; and
- The major investment happening in the Thames Gateway
Our new regeneration strategy for the next 5 years is based on the following:
- Increasing the prosperity (wealth) of our residents and businesses
- Improving the quality of life for all people in our community
- Creating a safe and attractive place that makes the community feel proud and gives them a sense of belonging
Supporting the community strategy
Our regeneration strategy supports our community strategy, 'Building communities, transforming lives', and working with our partners we will, over the next 5 years, contribute to achieving the aims set out in the community strategy.
