We are redeveloping the eastern end of Thames View as the homes there do not reach the standards for modern day living. Over the next 4 years we will prepare the site ready for construction of new homes in 2010.
The decision to redevelop the area came after we found that it would cost around £7 million to bring the homes up to the government's decent homes standard by 2010.
The area is made-up of both high-rise and low-rise blocks and refurbishing them would only have extended the life of the properties by about 10 years.
We also asked local residents if they wanted the blocks to be refurbished or knocked down and they voted for them to be demolished and for new properties to be built on the site.
We are working with residents to give them every opportunity to be involved in decisions about the future of the area. We have formed a steering group that is led by the local community and has 5 members who are residents.
The group meets with organisations that operate within the area and with council officers to discuss and organise future consultations and events.
We produce a regular newsletter for residents to keep them informed and through it residents voted to call both the newsletter and the local steering group the 'New View'.
