Information for parents and carers

Who are Educational Psychologists?

We are psychologists who have worked in schools as teachers. We have studied child development, learning, emotions and behaviour and the ways teachers, parents and other adults help children make progress.

What do Educational Psychologists do?

Educational Psychologists provide a service for children and young people aged 0-19. Most of our work takes place in school with children, parents and carers and teachers.

We also visit children and young people in a range of other settings e.g. at home, in nurseries, playgroups, and colleges.

Educational Psychologists may meet the child or young person individually but most of our work involves working jointly with parents and carers and teachers to support the child or young person.

How can an Educational Psychologist help me and my child?

Educational Psychologists see children and young people for a variety of reasons. These may include difficulties with behaviour, learning and medical or physical needs.

We gather information in a number of ways, for example through seeing the child or young person in their educational setting and meeting with staff and parents and carers.

We use this information to help staff and parents and carers plan ways forward to make a difference for the child or young person.

How will I be involved?

Educational Psychologists always aim to work closely with parents and carers. When we are asked to see a child, we meet parents and carers either in their educational setting or at home. It is important to us that parents are actively involved in discussions, decision making and actions.

Can I contact an Educational Psychologist?

You can ask another professional, for example someone at your child's school, nursery or clinic to contact us.

If your child is new to us we may initially encourage you to discuss your concerns further, with someone already known to you, or someone else, who we think may be able to help.

In some cases, with parents and carers permission, we will gather more information from other professionals already known to you, to find out how we can be of help.

If you have a concern about your child and you think we may be able to help, you can telephone or write to us directly, at any time.

What do Educational Psychologists do with the information they gather?

The information parents and carers give us is confidential and usually with parental agreement we may share information with others.
