Alley gates

Alleyways were originally designed to allow access for coalmen and rubbish collectors.

Today, deliveries to the back of the home are less frequent, with rubbish bins usually collected from the front of the house. The alleyways that are left are often full of fly tipped rubbish. They also allow easier access to the rear and side of a property.

National statistics show up that to 85% of burglars gain entry to homes by the rear or side of properties. Antisocial behaviour such as drinking, drug taking and vandalism and graffiti also blight alleyways across the borough.

One of the tasks of the Environmental Improvement team is to stop easy access to alleyways by installing Alley gates. Working with local support we facilitate the fitting of lockable, climb-proof gates at the ends of alleyways to keep out unwanted visitors.

The Environmental Improvement team also facilitate physical improvements to the environment such as the design and installation of bin storages, replacing unsightly fencing and working with the local community to identify projects that would reduce incidences of enviro-crimes.

The closure, and subsequent gating, of alleyways has already proved extremely popular amongst residents and has been particularly successful over the last 2 years.

New legislation now allows us to more easily limit access to highways such as alleyways and service roads which are prone to consistent antisocial behaviours. We now have a list of Gating Orders available to view online.

If you are a homeowner and feel that your communal alleyway could benefit from this scheme, please contact Ron Olive or David Greenidge or Martin Kelley at the address shown.
