We have important aims towards achieving sustainable development.
This means acting to limit worldwide and regional environmental threats, such as:
This does not mean stopping using non-renewable resources such as oil and gas, but that if we do need to use them, we make sure that we use them efficiently and that alternatives are developed to eventually replace them.
Renewable resources, such as water, should be used sensibly so water does not run out or the water that we use is not seriously polluted.
It is not enough to focus on economic and environmental policies if groups of society, or parts of the borough and surrounding region, are not part of that progress.
We have to reduce the harm to people's health caused by poverty, poor housing, unemployment and pollution.
We want everyone to share in high standards of living and better job opportunities. Our borough is changing fast and we all want our community to be successful and sustainable.
For us to succeed, businesses must produce the high-quality goods and services that consumers throughout the world want, at prices they are prepared to pay.
To achieve that, we need a workforce that has the education and skills for the 21st century and we need businesses that are ready to invest, and a structure to support them.
All our sustainable development aims are linked with our 7 Community priorities. These are:
