The government requires all local housing authorities to achieve a new 'decent homes' standard by 2010 and to consult tenants, leaseholders and other stakeholders about how best to achieve this and other wishes for service improvements.
The decent homes standard relates to the physical condition of the home, but the review of the options must look at work on dwellings as well as improvements to services and the local environment.
Housing Futures is the name for our response to the government's aim to make sure everyone has a decent home by 2010. It is not just about improvements to our homes. It also helps build strong links between housing and local regeneration within the borough, making our communities a better place to live and work.
Our options appraisal was lead by our Housing Futures project. After close consultation and discussion with tenants and Members we put forward a successful bid to the Government Office of London to pursue a mix of the available options: private finance initiative and staying with the council.
The Housing Futures project will make sure we reach the government's 2010 Decent Homes Standard and provide safe and secure homes that are energy efficient and stand in good environmental surroundings.
Having decent homes is all a part of creating communities free from poor housing and poor environments.
