The Barking and Dagenham Drug and Alcohol Action Team is responsible for delivering the governments 2008 10 year strategy 'Drugs: protecting families and communities' on a local level, and is an executive body with representatives from all the main authorities (Police, Probation, Primary Care Trust, local authority and the Fire Brigade), responsible for tackling problems associated with use of drugs and alcohol locally.

The Drug and Alcohol Action Team also have responsibility for commissioning drug treatment services across the borough that includes adult treatment, young people's treatment, education and prevention, and criminal justice along with having responsibility to make strategic decision on expenditure.
The Drug and Alcohol Action Team now has a fully integrated substance misuse treatment system to meet the needs of drug and alcohol users, their families, partners and carers as well as services for young people who may be experiencing problems with drug use.
