Mobility Schemes

Community Transport Services

A number of Community Transport services operate within the borough. These provide transport for members of the community who do not have suitable public transport services available for their travel needs.

Dial-a-Ride|

This is a local service that helps with the mobility needs of the disabled and elderly. The service provides transport all year round to allow potentially housebound people the opportunity to shop and use local amenities.

The difference between Dial-a-Ride and a normal service lies in the fact that the minibus is specially adapted with a wheelchair lift and removable seats to accommodate wheelchairs.

Passengers book a journey in advance simply by telephoning the day before they wish to travel and are picked up at their door with assistance from the driver if necessary. The services operates from 8am - 12pm with passengers required to pay a small fee for each journey.

For more information on the Dial-a-Ride Scheme and how to apply for an application form contact: 020 8498 8200.

Havering Community Transport|

This is a registered charity and a voluntary organisation established to provide low-cost accessible transport facilities. They cater for groups of elderly or disabled primarily within the London Borough of Havering, which includes member organisations, statutory authorities and clubs and families.

The service operates a small fleet of fully accessible minibuses, ranging in size from 12-15 passengers seats which can accommodate a combination of passengers in wheelchairs and seated passengers. Transport facilities can be booked for any reason and to range of destinations.

The service operates throughout the year (festival holidays are subject to volunteers being available). For more information and membership criteria please contact 01708 764 914.

Shopmobility|

Shopmobility provides manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters to help people with limited mobility to shop and use the city centre facilities. It can be used by young or old no matter whether their disability is temporary or permanent.

First time visitors need to register for membership and then training in the use of the vehicle will be provided. The user pays a deposit on the vehicle, which is refunded when the vehicle is returned.

The Shopmobility Scheme is located in the Vicarage Field Shopping Centre, Ripple Road, Barking.

Travel Assistance Scheme

The Transport for London and London Dial-a-Ride travel Assistance Scheme aims to give disabled Londoners the information and confidence they need to make use of accessible public transport, whether on its own, or using Dial-a-Ride or Taxicard to provide a door-to-door element at ether end of the journey.

They can offer advice on planning a journey using an accessible route and can provide someone to come with you for the first few times you try to use a low floor bus, accessible tube route or over ground train service.

Assistance can be offered between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday. Travel Assistance is free of charge to participants.

What does the scheme offer?

Short term assistance to help you gain confidence in accessible public transport so you can become an independent traveller.

What could I use the scheme for?

You could use the scheme to help you complete local journeys for example to the shops, library or local college, using local accessible bus routes.

You could use the scheme together with Dial-a-Ride or Taxicard to help you complete a longer distance journey that door to door services ether find hard to provide, or are very costly to you.

In fact, you could use the scheme to find out the options for any journey you want to complete in the London area by public transport.

Who can use the scheme?

The scheme is available to all disabled people between the ages of 18 and 70.
