Residential Care and Nursing Home Services

Continuing Care

Continuing NHS health care is a general term that describes care provided to a person where that care is fully funded by the National Health Service.

This care may be to a person in their own home, or within a hospital, a specialist placement, a residential, nursing home or hospice.

This type of care is often referred to as 'fully funded NHS care' although it is called by various names - most commonly continuing NHS health care, continuing care or fully funded NHS care.

One of the main differences between this care and the care provided by Social Services, is that NHS funded care is free to the person receiving it (there is no financial assessment).

When Social Services provide services, there must be a financial assessment to determine the contribution towards the cost of any care.

Both Age Concern and the Alzheimer's Society have produced helpful guides which explain this care in more detail.

The guides have been produced to help people in need of services, their carers, and professionals working in health and social care to know when the NHS is responsible for paying for the full cost of packages of care.
