Menus

A high-quality, balanced meal helps kids to concentrate and gives them enough energy to stay active and alert right through the school day.

We believe that school meals represent the best option in terms of contributing to a healthy diet and value for money when compared to other sources of food available to children for their mid-day meal i.e. packed lunches.

In Barking and Dagenham we endeavour to create interesting and nutritious meals.

Across our school menus we have:

Restricted chips to once in a 3 week cycle. These chips are 33% less in fat
Ensured that yoghurt, fresh fruit and cheese and biscuits are available daily
Introduced more pasta dishes
Introduced more home-made main courses
Introduced a choice of vegetables available for free
Removed breaded meat items

Over the coming year we intend to:

Introduce more oily fish choices
Introduce more fresh vegetables
Widen the range of vegetarian dishes
Offer Fair Trade products in secondary schools
Nutritional Analysis of Menu from September 2006
Setting up Flagship Units for Centres of Excellence
Implement Cypad monitoring system facility to provide schools with written reports
Level 1 Award in providing healthier school meals service for staff
