Butler Court

Purpose built accommodation for teachers.

A great place to live

Butler Court was opened in July 1991. Its renovation from a former garage block (which featured in architectural journals) was seen as an innovative idea, addressing the needs of the borough in respect of improving the recruitment and retention of staff, particularly teachers.

Accommodation in London can be expensive, especially for young, single people. Butler Court offers teachers an affordable way to live in London, and is ideally located with excellent road and underground links to schools throughout the borough.

A secure and safe environment

Butler Court has a Resident Manager who lives on the ground floor, and 2 part-time Assistant Managers. The manager's office is located by the main entrance and is staffed from 7am - 12 noon and 4pm - 9pm.

The Resident Manager

The main door has a security entry system increasing the safety and security of residents. Keys for new residents can be collected between 7am - 11.30am and 4pm - 8.30pm, Monday to Saturday only.

Each resident is allocated a pigeon hole where mail, messages, and other items may be collected. There are 4 communal telephones for residents use.

Housekeepers clean and service all communal areas, although residents are responsible for cleaning up after themselves in the kitchen and keeping their own rooms clean.

High quality accommodation

Butler Court provides 52 single (including a room adapted for the disabled) and 2 double bedrooms - all fully furnished and tastefully decorated. A smoke alarm, TV aerial socket (each room requires its own TV licence) and spot lamps also come as standard.

A bedroom

There are plenty of bathrooms and toilets situated around the building; these are regularly cleaned and serviced. The rooms vary in size, ranging from 15 to over 25 square metres. Rent is dependent upon the size of the room and is inclusive of heating and lighting. Residents must provide their own bed linens and towels.

Each room also enjoys the benefit of an audio door entry system for added security. Residents are responsible for obtaining contents insurance.

All the facilities you have at home

Butler Court has 2 comfortable and spacious lounges, both with video players and large screen TVs where residents may relax and socialise. The lounges have large screen televisions and one has a piano.

It has 4 large kitchens which are well equipped and are fully fitted with electric cookers/grills, microwave ovens, and dining tables and chairs. There is ample freezer and fridge space.

The laundry room

Residents must provide their own crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils. A large supermarket is a 5 minute walk away. The laundry offers excellent value for money. Coin operated washers and dryers are provided for use by residents. It is also equipped with ironing boards.

On the ground floor there is a fitness and games room. It includes a large multi-gym facility, table tennis table, dart board, pool table and exercise mats. There is also a major sports centre near the accommodation.

Renting a room

Rooms are let to teachers new to Barking and Dagenham. Priority is always given to Newly Qualified Teachers. Limited accommodation may be available at other times in the year. A small returnable deposit is required and rent is then collected from salary in arrears each month.

A kitchen

Usually residents stay for a year, with the possibility of an extension if required. A list of rules exists for the benefit and safety of residents and this should be read carefully before accepting a room at Butler Court.
