Transforming Key Stage 3
The problems facing Key Stage 3 are diverse and widespread. They fall within 4 broad categories:
- Transition - the dip in pupils' performance at the start of secondary education
- The growing disaffection of pupils in the early years of secondary education
- The quality of teaching in Key Stage 3; and
- The slow rate of progress between the ages of 11 and 14
Barking and Dagenham was a pilot borough for the strategy and has been implementing the national strategy since September 2001.
The Key Stage 3 National Strategy consists of subject strands, including literacy, numeracy, science and ICT and sets up frameworks for teaching. Transforming teaching and learning at Key Stage 3 is at the heart of the strategy and focusing on this has brought some encouraging results for pupils in the borough since 2001.
