We know how important memorials are as a lasting symbol of remembrance.

We offer technical advice and help to make sure that all memorials meet cemetery regulations.

We are here to give you information and guidelines on memorials and explain the regulations that apply in our cemeteries.

These regulations are meant to give you choice and to make sure that all memorials are safe and will not be a danger to visitors and staff.

How to have a memorial put on a grave

We recommend that families wait 6 months after a burial before placing a traditional memorial on a grave.

This delay allows the ground to settle and helps reduce the risk if the memorial sinking or leaning.

Headstones which are to be placed on lawn-type sections can be put up sooner.

We do not provide a masonry service so you will need to contact a reputable memorial mason or funeral director to order the work.

Memorials available for cremated remains

In our cemeteries, we have memorial gardens to bury cremated remains in caskets or urns.

These burial plots are granted for 25 year period. Each plot can hold up to 4 burials of ashes.

A memorial wedge or vase can be placed on the plot.

Other forms of memorial available

Memorial trees

Some people may want to buy a memorial tree for planting. This option is available in each of our 3 cemetery sites.

Memorial benches

You can buy hardwood benches with engraved plaques for dedication at all of our cemetery sites. Please contact us for more details of prices and availability.

Regulations

The cemetery regulations relating to memorials are very strict so that our cemeteries respect people who have died and are appreciated by all visitors.

There are a number of limitations on the size and type of materials used for headstones and memorials, so you should make sure that we approve them, as well as any planned inscriptions, before any work starts.

We have a legal duty to make sure that we maintain and operate our cemeteries in line with the Local Government Act 1972 and the Local Authorities Cemeteries Order 1977.
