In busier areas of Barking and Dagenham there is provision for time limited free parking, where the length of stay and return is limited to anything between 1 and 4 hours. Check the parking signs on the side of the road for confirmation.
Drivers are advised to ensure they have enough change to purchase a pay and display ticket before parking and to ensure their vehicle is parked wholly within the parking place markings.
If a vehicle is left unattended, with no obvious signs of a parking ticket having been purchased or displayed on the windscreen, or if the ticket is showing as being after its expiry time, the vehicle may be issued with a penalty charge notice.
If a pay and display machine is showing as being 'out-of-order' or faulty, a note will be placed on the machine indicating where the nearest machine is located.
Drivers must use an alternative machine to purchase a pay and display ticket. An alternative machine is usually located a short distance away.
However, there are 2 locations where there are no alternative nearby machines available:
London Road / North Street car park|
Wakering Road (on and off street)|
We ask drivers to show consideration towards other road users, including pedestrians and the disabled, when parking their vehicles. Parking within the bay markings ensures your vehicle is not causing danger, obstruction or congestion to others.
Where 1 wheel of a vehicle is entirely outside bay markings, a penalty charge notice may be issued, as this may inconvenience other drivers by denying them the opportunity to park in a neighbouring parking bay.
Our policy for parking on footways is that we will not issue a penalty charge notice to a vehicle parked on an unmarked footway, providing the driver has allowed adequate access for wheelchairs, prams and buggies (around 1.2 metres).
When a vehicle is observed parked on a footway that is adjacent to double yellow lines or school keep clear markings - a penalty charge notice will be issued, as these restrictions have been installed for improving road safety.
Where signs and markings have been placed, this means parking on the footway has been formalised, which means vehicles must park within the specified bay markings.
School entrances are marked with yellow zigzag markings, which indicate that vehicles may not park or stop during the hours of operation, which are indicated on information signs placed at the side of the road.
School keep clears have been installed to allow children a clearer view of traffic movement on roads when they arrive and leave school premises.
Drivers must not, under any circumstances, park on school keep clear markings for any length of period and may be subject to being issued with an instant penalty charge notice - either by a Civil Enforcement Officer (Parking Attendant) or by a CCTV device.
Drivers should not park on zebra crossings, or the zigzag lines approaching them. It is an offence to stop on these areas at any time, as it poses a serious hazard to pedestrians using crossings. The Police may also enforce this restriction and can prosecute offenders, resulting in the possible endorsement of a driving licence.
Stopping on bus stops is forbidden. This restriction usually applies at all times, but there will be a sign attached the bus stop that provides details of the restrictions in place.
There is a prohibition (ban) on waiting overnight throughout London, between the hours of 6.30pm and midnight and from midnight to 8am.
This ban applies to any commercial vehicle with a maximum gross weight of over 5 tonnes (unladen) and the vehicle does not have to be loaded to this weight for a penalty charge notice to be issued.
