Drivers in Barking and Dagenham that ignore traffic signs could face a fine of £120.
The enforcement of moving traffic contraventions was previously the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police. This responsibility was passed to London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in January 2008, following decriminalisation.
This means we will continue to provide enforcement efforts to maintain and improve the level of free flowing traffic within the borough, allowing the Police to focus their resources on other aspects of transport and fighting crime.
There are 21 traffic contraventions (
PDF 186K) enforced under the scheme, all of which are existing road signs well known to drivers and are contained within the Highway Code. Any driver ignoring these signs could face receiving a penalty charge notice.
Revenue generated from this enforcement activity is to be re-invested into improving conditions and safety for Barking and Dagenham road users.
We enforce these offences with a network of CCTV cameras around the borough. We also use a mobile enforcement vehicle or 'smart car', which is fully equipped with CCTV cameras. The mobile unit is able to move around the borough more quickly, which means we can provide enforcement at a number of locations every day.
Drivers that ignore road signs are not only endangering themselves, but are endangering other road users. Stopping these few inconsiderate drivers will result in safer roads and less congestion for everyone in the community.
If you have any suggestions about locations that you feel require increased levels of enforcement within Barking and Dagenham, please let us know your views by emailing traffic@lbbd.gov.uk or by telephoning 020 8215 3005.
