Comment about a neighbour's planning application

If the Officer considers that a planning application will affect your property, they will write to you inviting you to make comments.

For major applications, the Officer will also display a notice on the application's site and in some instances will advertise that an application has been received in the local newspaper.

Anyone can make a comment about any application. If you wish to support an application or object to it you can do so by writing to the Development Control Section at:

Please note: We do not currently publish comments from the public on this web site, but planning officers take any comments received into account when considering a case. If you would like to see the comments made about a particular case, they are available to view at the planning services reception desk on the ground floor of Barking Town Hall.

When commenting on a planning application, please make sure that you quote the application number (or the address where the proposed development is taking place), and make it clear whether you are objecting, supporting or commenting on the proposal.

Our planning officers take the following issues into consideration when deciding an application:

Loss of amenity - a neighbour doesn't have to object for us to consider these matters
The scale/size/design of the proposal in relation to other properties
Any impact on protected trees
Highways issues such as parking, manoeuvring and visibility
Any impact on listed buildings or conservation areas
Adopted council planning polices
Central Government Planning Policy Statements

The following issues are not normally considered:

Loss of view
Land ownership disputes
Civil covenants or agreements between land owners
Personal matters relating to the specific applicant
Whether work has begun
Any potential changes to land/property values

The comments you make will form part of the officers report, which may be delegated to officers or put before the Development Control Board for decision.

The meeting of the Board is a public meeting that anyone is welcome to attend. On certain applications which need to be decided by the development control board there is an opportunity to speak. However decisions on most applications are delegated to officers.
