Introduction PDF 10K
Provides a background and specifies it is divided into 2 main sections, part 1 general statements and strategic policies and part 2 more detailed policies.
Each chapter contains a justification for the policies that were adopted.
Part 1
Part 1 PDF 59K
This contains background information about the borough and introduces the 30 strategic policies that set out the tone for all the detailed policies which follow in chapters.
Part 2
Chapter 1 PDF 66K
This focuses on housing policies and sets out 22 detailed policies for housing standards.
Chapter 2 PDF 40K
This focuses on employment policies and sets out 14 detailed policies for developments on employment land.
Chapter 3 PDF 43K
Is about policies related to shopping uses, where it was preferred new shops should be built and what kind of shops would be permitted in places other than Barking Town Centre, which was given individual policies, see the next chapter. Policies are included for markets and replacing shop fronts. Chadwell Heath and Heathway, Dagenham are specifically identified.
Chapter 4 PDF 49K
Is specifically devoted to Barking Town Centre which also had a more detailed map showing proposed land uses called an Insert map. A number of policies are also stated about specific places in the Town Centre. Many parts of these polices have been implemented.
Chapter 5 PDF 36K
This is about Barking Riverside as it is called now, but in 1995 was called Barking Reach, after a part of the River Thames which it is close to. This area was defined in another more detailed plan or insert map. It gives the policies intended to implement a major housing development in this area. In places where these policies have not yet been implemented it has been superseded by supplementary plans.
Chapter 6 PDF 81K
Is about waste, flooding, pollution, nature conservation and ecology and open space policies.
Chapter 7 PDF 67K
Looks at the issues related to the design of buildings and spaces around them. This includes conservation area and listed building policies and how co-operation can be sought to provide support for archaeological investigations and the purpose of design briefs for major development sites.
Chapter 8 PDF 44K
Is about the criteria for the location and design of community buildings such as hospitals, surgeries and churches.
Chapter 9 PDF 29K
This is about design needs for arts and cultural buildings and what are the policies for tourism and hotels, and transport facilities for tourists and other visitors.
Chapter 10 PDF 80K
Is about transport and car parking policies. This has been largely superseded by new car parking standards, the completion of many projects specifically outlined in this chapter and the new Local Implementation Plan which is the local interpretation of the Mayors Transport Strategy for London.

Many policies apply generally and are not directed at specific places. This shows those policies which have a specific location in the borough.
