We have launched a new, improved green garden-waste scheme, which helps you to compost your grass cuttings, leaves, weeds, flowers, hedge trimmings and prunings.
Under the scheme you can carry on using biodegradable bags or you can use wheelie bins. Biodegradable bags break down (dissolve) over time and become part of the compost.
You must sign up for the new scheme and will have to pay for the bags or bins.
We are using a government grant to help with the cost and this means you will be able to buy 26 bags (2 rolls) for £5, or a wheelie bin for £10.
As of Friday 29 June 2007 we will no longer be providing a complimentary roll of biodegradable bags to residents who purchase a green wheelie bin. Residents who registered and purchased a wheelie bin from Monday 2 July 2007 can expect delivery within 10 working days.
You can sign up for the scheme and pay for your bags or bins at Dagenham Civic Centre or visit the One Stop Shop at the Barking Learning Centre. You can also pay by credit or debit card through Barking and Dagenham Direct on 020 8215 3000.
We will write to you to let you know when your garden waste will be collected. If you have decided to buy a wheelie bin, we will tell you when it will be delivered.
We will collect your garden waste every 2 weeks on the same day as we collect your household rubbish.
If you have biodegradable bags left over from last year or you have a spare wheelie bin that you can use for your garden waste, please register with us anyway so we know to collect from your home.
Your spare wheelie bin must not be larger than 240 litres - this measurement should be on your wheelie bin.
For more information or to sign up for the scheme please go to Dagenham Civic Centre, between 8.45am - 4.30pm or visit the One Stop Shop at the Barking Learning Centre. Alternatively, you can telephone Barking and Dagenham Direct on 020 8215 3000 between 8am - 8pm.
Green garden waste is collected fortnightly on the same day as your normal refuse collections. If you are unsure of your collection date please contact Barking and Dagenham Direct on 020 8215 3000.
