Glass Recycling Scheme

Recycle your glass, jars and bottles

As a part of our commitment to helping the environment we have introduced a glass recycling scheme that will make it easy for you to recycle your glass jars and bottles.

This scheme means that you can recycle different coloured bottles and jars; such as wine and drink bottles, and, jam and cooking sauce jars, by simply washing them out and putting them in the box we have given you.

What can I recycle in my box for glass?

Yes please:

Clear, green, brown and blue glass
Glass beer, wine and spirit bottles
Jam jars and other food jars (without lids)
All other glass bottles including soft drink and fruit juice bottles, and sauce bottles

No thank you:

Drinking glasses
Plates and cups
Pyrex or vision cookware
Mirrors, windows and windscreens
Light bulbs
Broken glass

How do I use my box for glass?

Simply put your glass in the box we have given you (please rinse it first and remove any lids)
Place your box on the boundary of your property fortnightly (see calendar on the next page), and not on the street, before 7am on the morning of your usual collection

What happens to your recycled glass?

After we have collected your glass bottles and jars, it is screened for contamination before being either crushed or melted. Most glass can be re-moulded to make new jars and bottles. Crushed glass is also used widely in the building industry.

Why is it important to recycle glass?

Glass does not rot, so putting it into landfill takes up huge amounts of space
Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials and for every tonne of recycled glass used, 1.2 tonnes of raw materials are preserved
Recycling just 2 bottles saves enough energy to boil enough water for 5 cups of tea
