'To provide and promote quality opportunities for the community to participate in sport and physical activities to encourage healthier lifestyles'.
The Sports Development Unit look to achieve these aims and objectives in a way that puts people first, delivers equality of opportunity and promotes health. The provision and development of our services will be safe, enjoyable, appropriate and accessible to all, offering a corporate approach to the development of sporting opportunities for people in Barking and Dagenham.
The Unit works with many sections of the community including the target groups of young people, women, the over 50s, young adults, minority ethnic communities and people with disabilities.
We continue to seek external funding to enhance our service and are committed to cross-boundary working to share resources and responsibilities in the development of sporting opportunities across the wider areas.
We also provide support and education for our users and partners and will act as adviser on a local and national basis. We support our local voluntary clubs and borough sports council to offer opportunities in training issues to include child protection, social inclusion and leadership skills.
We offer coaching sessions and coaching awards and ensure that they are the best in quality standards.
We continue with our commitment to our community and work towards the authorities core priorities and the governments crosscutting best value themes.
The Sports Development work plan is divided into 3 main work areas:
