Terms of Reference
Attendance Link Governor
Aim
To assist in promoting good attendance by:
- Support the Head Teacher and the school on attendance matters
- Support parents by raising awareness of the need for good attendance
- Support pupils by celebrating good attendance
- Support Governors by keeping them informed of the issues/trends relating to attendance
1. Supporting the Head Teacher
- Meet annually with the Head Teacher to discuss attendance issues and review policy
- Consider with the Head Teacher the schools' annual target for attendance
- Assist the Head Teacher in monitoring the following school trends in attendance:
- (i) Authorised absence
- (ii) Unauthorised absence
- (iii) Holidays during term time
- Ensure governor representation on school based panel meetings as and when considered appropriate
2. Supporting parents
- Check the procedures relating to attendance are clearly stated in the school prospectus
- Check that reference to good attendance is included and promoted in the 'home-school' agreement
- Be available to consider with the Head Teacher 'exceptional' attendance issues that parents have which fall outside the schools' normal procedures
- Check that parents are kept informed about the achievements in literacy throughout the year via the school profile, prospectus, school reports, newsletter, etc.
3. Supporting pupils
- Endorse the use of the following rewards/incentives to acknowledge and celebrate good attendance, including:
- Weekly attendance shields for the top class in each year group
- Termly 100% certificates/bookmarks
- Termly top class Lower/Upper School rewarded
- Annual 100% certificate/ £5 book tokens
4. Supporting Governors
- Be a resource to Governors by having an overview of the schools' attendance
- Work with the Head Teacher to ensure that any local authority, Department for Children, Schools and Families or Governor statutory requirements are being met
- Work with the Head Teacher in ensuring that any local authority or Department for Children, Schools and Families initiatives relating to attendance are evaluated and applied in the light of the strengths and challenges of our school
Note
It must be acknowledged that each school is unique. Therefore these terms of reference should reflect the strengths and challenges of each school and should not be adopted wholesale. The terms of reference should be reviewed annually in the autumn term with any recommendations for change being submitted to the whole governing body.
