Terms of Reference
Health and Safety Link Governor
Aim
To assist in providing the best possible health and safety provision from within the resources available:
- Support the Head Teacher and the school on health and safety matters
- Support parents by raising awareness on health and safety matters
- Support pupils by promoting an environment that is both health and safe
- Support Governors by keeping them informed of the issues/trends relating to health and safety
1. Supporting the Head Teacher
- Meet annually with the Head Teacher to discuss health and safety issues and review policy
- Consider with the Head Teacher developments that will strengthen the health and safety practice of the school
- Assist the Head Teacher in the process of monitoring health and safety:
By ensuring adequate health and safety management systems are in place
- Ensure governor representation on school based meetings relating to 'major strategic' modifications to the health and safety provision
2. Supporting parents
- Check that matters relating to health and safety are clearly stated in the school prospectus
- Be available to consider with the Head Teacher 'exceptional' health and safety issues that parents have which fall outside the schools' normal procedures
- Check that parents are kept informed about the achievements in literacy throughout the year via the school profile, prospectus, school reports, newsletter, etc.
3. Supporting pupils
- Endorse any programmes or initiatives that promote health and safety
4. Supporting Governors
- Be a resource to Governors by having an overview of the schools' health and safety practice and procedures
- Work with the Head Teacher to ensure that any local authority, Department for Children, Schools and Families or Governor statutory requirements are being met and complied with in line with Health and Safety Executive guidance (HS (G) 65)
- Work with the Head Teacher in ensuring that any local authority or Department for Children, Schools and Families initiatives relating to health and safety are evaluated and applied in the light of the strengths and challenges of our school
Note
It must be acknowledged that each school is unique. Therefore these terms of reference should reflect the strengths and challenges of each school and should not be adopted wholesale. The terms of reference should be reviewed annually in the autumn term with any recommendations for change being submitted to the whole governing body.
