Terms of Reference
Numeracy Link Governor
Aim
To assist in providing the best possible learning opportunities for numeracy from within the resources available:
- Support the Head Teacher and the curriculum leader on numeracy matters
- Support parents by raising awareness of the need for good numeracy skills
- Support pupils by celebrating successes
- Support Governors by keeping them informed of the issues relating to numeracy
1. Supporting the Head Teacher and the Curriculum Leader
- Meet annually to discuss numeracy issues and review policy
- Consider and review the schools' annual target for mathematics
- Assist in the process of monitoring numeracy by analysing:
- (i) School based benchmarks
- (ii) School based analysis information
- Ensure governor representation on school based meetings relating to 'major strategic' modifications to the mathematics provision
2. Supporting parents
- Check that curriculum matters relating to numeracy are clearly stated in the school prospectus
- Consider and review 'exceptional' numeracy issues that parents have which fall outside the schools' normal procedures
- Check that parents are kept informed about the achievements in mathematics throughout the year via the school profile, prospectus, school reports, newsletter, etc.
3. Supporting pupils
- Endorse the use of incentives to acknowledge and celebrate achievements in numeracy
- Ensure that all groups of underachieving pupils are identified, set appropriate targets and action is taken
4. Supporting Governors
- Be a resource to Governors by having an overview of the schools' numeracy curriculum
- Work with the Head Teacher to ensure that any local authority, Department for Children, Schools and Families or governor statutory requirements are being met
- Work with the Head Teacher in ensuring that any local authority or Department for Children, Schools and Families initiatives relating to numeracy are evaluated and applied in the light of the strengths and challenges of our school
Note
It must be acknowledged that each school is unique. Therefore these terms of reference should reflect the strengths and challenges of each school and should not be adopted wholesale. The terms of reference should be reviewed annually in the autumn term with any recommendations for change being submitted to the whole governing body.
