Terms of Reference
Special Educational Needs Governor
Aim
To assist in providing the best possible special educational needs provision from within the resources available:
- Supporting the Head Teacher, Special Educational Needs Coordinators and the school on special educational needs matters
- Supporting parents by raising awareness of the provision for pupils with special educational needs
- Supporting pupils in their successes
- Supporting Governors by keeping them informed of the issues/trends relating to special educational needs
1. Supporting the Head Teacher/Special Educational Needs Coordinator by:
- Meeting annually with the Head Teacher to discuss special educational needs issues and review policy
- Considering with the Head Teacher the school's profile of special needs
- Assisting the Head Teacher in the process of monitoring special educational needs:
Through the special educational needs framework
- Ensuring governor representation on school based meetings relating to 'major strategic' modifications to the special educational needs provision
2. Supporting parents by:
- Checking that curriculum provision relating to special educational needs are clearly stated in the school prospectus
- Being available to consider with the Head Teacher 'exceptional' special educational needs issues that parents have which fall outside the schools' normal procedures
- Checking that parents are kept informed about the information relating to special educational needs throughout the year via school reports, newsletter, etc.
3. Supporting pupils by:
- Ensuring special educational need pupils are making progress
- Celebrating the achievements of pupils with special educational needs
4. Supporting Governors by:
- Being a resource to Governors in having an overview of the schools' special educational needs provision
- Working with the Head Teacher to ensure that any local authority, Department for Children, Schools and Families or government statutory requirements are being met
- Working with the Head Teacher in ensuring that any local authority or Department for Children, Schools and Families initiatives relating to special educational needs are evaluated and applied in the light of the strengths and challenges of our school
Note
It must be acknowledged that each school is unique. Therefore these terms of reference should reflect the strengths and challenges of each school and should not be adopted wholesale. The terms of reference should be reviewed annually in the autumn term with any recommendations for change being submitted to the whole governing body.
