Mathematics

The mathematics team works in partnership with schools, adult education providers and in the wider community supporting all aspects of provision for the curriculum and teaching of mathematics.

The work of the team spans all phases of education in schools from Foundation Stage to post-16, and includes adult education and developing mathematics/numeracy within the community. Continuing professional development opportunities are provided to individual teachers, subject leaders and schools to reflect priorities set by The National Strategies, the School Improvement Service and other local needs.

In recent years major projects have been developed to support improvements in standards in primary mathematics through the Improving Primary Mathematics Project and a joint venture with Jo Richardson Community School in writing the new 2 tier GCSE scheme of work.

The Improving Primary Mathematics Initiative is an on-going development, providing comprehensive teaching materials for Years 1 to 6, which are fully aligned with the requirements of the Renewed Framework for Mathematics. At the heart of Improving Primary Mathematics is a belief that pupils develop understanding of mathematics through talk. Further information may be found at the Improving Primary Mathematics web page.

Support for schools is always a team effort, but individuals within the team lead in particular areas.

The post of the Mathematics Adviser is currently vacant.

Surinder Panesar is the secondary mathematics Advisory Teacher. He advises on Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and A-Level and leads on secondary developments, including intervention in Year 9 and Year 11. He works with mathematics line managers and subject leaders, as well as working alongside teachers in the classroom. He also runs training (based on national and local priorities) offering support and guidance throughout the secondary phase.

Christine Harvey coordinates the work of the primary team in central and school-based continuing professional development programmes, which reflect national and local priorities. She leads on intervention programmes in Year 5/6, use of data and pupil tracking. She also coordinates the development of subject leadership for mathematics coordinators.

Jean Jacyna leads the development of Improving Primary Mathematics and runs training on the use of new materials. She works alongside the ICT team to develop embedding ICT in mathematics, delivers National Strategy training for Key Stage 2 and coordinates the Primary Mathematics website on the Learning Gateway.

Ann McDonnell leads on the development of functional skills, stand alone or integrated within diplomas, throughout secondary schools and further education colleges. She works with the family learning team to ensure links are maintained between classroom practice and parental input. As an adult numeracy curriculum officer Ann works to promote the Skills for life agenda for residents and employees.
