Secondary Language and Communication

Current priorities for the team are our major primary and secondary English and Literacy Projects which are well established. The team also has a significant input into the development of the literacy strand of the Adult Basic Skills Initiative.

The primary project began in September 1996 and the secondary a year later. The Adult Basic Skills Initiative began in 2001.

All projects are fully aligned with national initiatives including the Primary and Secondary Strategies.

The team provides an outline English curriculum, training for teachers, detailed teachers' manuals mainly written at the level of the individual lesson and advisory teacher support.

The team also provides training and support for literacy across the whole curriculum.

The English team run a substantial programme of INSET for all Key Stages and adult education providers. Members of the team work in all local education authority infant, junior, primary, secondary schools and adult education establishments alongside teachers and providers offering support and guidance.
