The School Improvement Service, on behalf of the local authority, believes that schools should maximise the benefits of Workforce Development and Governor Support by linking it to school improvement, performance management and the workforce remodeling agenda.
The task for the School Improvement Service is to help create a culture where schools have a real commitment to lifelong learning. Head Teachers, staff and governors understand that Workforce Development and Governor Support is a professional entitlement. The outcomes will be that staff feel valued and supported and institutions become vibrant learning communities.
The School Improvement Service recognises that:
The Professional Development training programme is accessed online and is available to all schools and the majority of units within the borough. This electronic system enables teachers to view all planned courses that include details of venue, time and dates as well as descriptions of courses together with course outcomes. Teachers then book online. Support is available at the Centre to discuss any aspect of the booking procedure by contacting Mary Looney or Lesley Briden.
We also welcome room bookings, which are independent of the Professional Development programme. The Professional Development Centre has 6 training rooms, 5 of which are equipped with the latest presentation systems. Flipcharts and pens are also provided. Mary Looney would be happy to help you with your booking enquiry.
The local education authority acts as the appropriate body for the induction of all newly qualified teachers in the authority. The central induction programme is designed to support schools and enable all newly qualified teachers to meet the core standards by the end of their induction year.
As part of its quality assurance role in school improvement, the School Improvement Service monitor the teaching of all newly qualified teachers in the first term of their induction year. This decision has been agreed, on an annual basis, with both Newly Qualified Teacher Steering Groups.
The key elements in the Induction programme for all newly qualified teachers in 2008-2009 are:
The Professional Development Centre is located on Level 3 of the Westbury Centre. The Centre aims to provide a training venue which is welcoming, friendly and comfortable and which reflects the high value the borough places on the professional and personal development of its employees.
Our canteen is welcoming and friendly. Complimentary tea and coffee is available to all course participants up until 9.30am. Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day with sandwiches and light snacks available at lunch time from our canteen on Level 5. Jenny Watts is our canteen supervisor. Jenny would be happy to discuss your refreshment and dietary requirements with you.
Vending machines supplying hot drinks are also available on Level 3 and 5 for courses held during the evenings.
A comprehensive reprographics service is available at the Centre to provide materials to support the training programme. This service is also available to all course providers who are using the Centre's training facilities, together with support for the presentation equipment. Sandra Day, our Reprographics Technician, would be pleased to help you with your training equipment requirements.
