We launched a 'Cleaner, Greener, Safer' campaign at the beginning of 2006 aimed at improving these services across the borough and encouraging residents to help the Council by outlining their responsibilities.
At the beginning of 2007 we asked you what you thought of the campaign and whether you thought the borough had improved.
The survey findings are back:
250 residents took part and the majority of them thought the borough is cleaner than a year ago.
60% say levels of cleanliness in Barking and Dagenham have improved and 41% put this improvement down to better refuse and street cleaning services, while a further 26% said the introduction of more litter bins have made the streets cleaner.
21% of people thought the cleaner, greener, safer campaign had helped to make the borough tidy.
Other responses that rated highly were the Street Warden Service, and providing better information about services.
Composting, recycling and putting litter in a bin rated highly as some of the activities, which residents do on a regular basis to help keep the borough clean.
81% of those surveyed said that they recycled all the time, with 60% saying they recycled more now than they did last year.
Composting rates have increased with more than 40% of those questioned taking part and 17% composting more than they did last year.
79% of respondents put their litter in the bin all the time with 16% telling us that they do this more than they did last year.
The cleaner, greener, safer campaign was credited as the reason people now recycle, compost and put their litter in the bin more than they used to. The other reasons that were given were free compost bins and more orange bags being provided.
35% of people consulted said the borough is safer than a year ago with 33% noting that they have not seen a change.
The reasons given for people feeling safer are an increase in CCTV - 26%, more police patrols - 21% and the Street Wardens - 17%.
This year we have been focusing on tackling graffiti, improving the cleanliness of our streets and services like the green garden waste scheme. We have also been working to make you feel safer in the borough and developing parks that people want to spend their time in.
