The rates charged on non-domestic (business) premises are calculated by multiplying the Rateable Value by a 'rate in the pound' known as the Multiplier.
The rateable value is fixed by the Valuation Office Agency, which is an agency of HM Revenue and Customs and is independent of the council.
Currently all non-domestic property is re-valued every 5 years.
The rateable value of a premises at the last revaluation (1 April 2005), represents its annual open market rental value as at the 1 April 2003. The next general revaluation takes effect from 1 April 2010.
The values of property in respect of which rates are paid to us are shown in the Rating List which may be viewed on the Valuation Office Agency website.
Alternatively copies are available for inspection at the offices of the Valuation Office Agency at 10th Floor, Crown House, 6 Linton Road, Barking, IG11 8HJ.
If you have difficulty finding the rateable value you require please contact the Business Rate team.
If a ratepayer believes the rateable value is excessive, they should contact the Valuation Office at the address shown above to discuss the matter.
