The Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment to students, of up to £30, if they stay on at school or college after completing GCSEs.
It is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 depending on household income that is paid directly into the students' bank account. The money is intended to help with the day-to-day costs when students stay on at school or college - such as travel, books and equipment for their course.
Pupils can find more information on, and apply for, education maintenance allowance from their school, their Connexions personal adviser, or the school / college they want to go to.
