Cashiers

 

The Cashiers' service provides the main cash collection facility within the borough. The core activities of the section involve either physically collecting money (e.g. council tax, service charges or rents) or paying it out (as wages/petty cash/refugees).

 

We also administer the Public guardianship cases for the borough, appointee-ships and Part III accommodation finances.

 

The Cashiers have 3 main customer contact points:

 

Civic Centre Cashiers Office

This team is responsible for collection and payment of over the counter money. The counting and banking of miscellaneous income (school/libraries). The Administrative activities of the Cashiers function are delivered from these offices.

This team are responsible for over the counter cash handling in the Barking area and also act as an overflow for work at peak times.

Refugee payout office

Although the administration activities primarily take place at the Civic Centre, the Barking Learning Centre in Barking houses the refugee payout office.

 

Core activities

The core activities of the section involve either collecting money (i.e. taxes, charges or rents) or paying it out (cash salary payments, asylum seekers, pensioners and petty cash).

 

The section is responsible for processing the payments in and out for the council. Cashiers process transactions to the value of approximately £750 million annually.

 

Borough wide collections:

Responsibility for the collection and processing of all payments received by the schools, libraries, sports centres and car parks in the borough.

 

In person receipts:

There are 2 main counter service operations within the section. These are based at the Civic Centre Dagenham and Barking Learning Centre. Cashiers can receive payments for all bills or invoices that we issue.

 

Petty cash payments:

The Cashiers Service will process all petty cash payments for the council, either delivered to the section or paid in person.

 

Asylum seeker payments:

In conjunction with Adult and Community Services undertake the make up, processing and payment of the boroughs asylum seekers. These are made at the secondary counter in Barking Learning Centre.

 

Bank statement processing:

The Cashiers service will process all payments received via the Bank, either Bacs, one off payments or regular receipts.

 

Appointee and custody duties:

The Cashiers service will undertake the duties as appointee and process all receipts and payments for custody accounts, collect benefits and pay bills for all accounts under Part III National Assistance Act (1948).

 

Public guardianship cases (previously called Court of Protection):

The Cashiers service will undertake the day to day operation of the work associated with these cases.
