Council Tax

Paying your Council Tax

Date of payment

Payment of council tax instalments must be received on your account by the date shown on the bill. This is normally the 1st of each month, April to January.

Instalments

Your bill shows you how much and when to pay. For council tax the law states that the minimum instalment value must be £5. The government introduced this rule in order to help keep collection costs to a minimum.

Those people who have less than £50 a year to pay, will not make the usual 10 payments because of the instalment value rule, for example, if you owe £35 you would only have 7 instalments of £5 rather than 10 payments of £3.50.

Bills issued after 31st December are due 14 days after issue.

Half yearly and yearly payments

Some people prefer to pay half yearly or yearly. Although there is no longer any special arrangements for these types of payments, you can still pay any amount of instalments in advance so long as you keep your account up-to-date.

Direct Debit

Direct Debit logo

This is our preferred method of payment as it saves you and the council time and money when making a payment. It is the only method of payment that comes with a guarantee.

Once the Direct Debit has been set up, there is no action to be taken on your part, as payments are automatically debited from your bank or building society account.

If the amount of the instalment changes, (for example in the new financial year) you will be automatically notified of the change.

Direct Debits can be taken on the 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd of each month. You should always check to make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the payment at this date, as your bank may charge you if you do not.

Please note: Direct Debits cannot be made from certain types of account, for example, savings accounts. Please check with your bank if you are unsure.
