Result

At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?

Yes = 9,436 (29.64%)

No = 22,338 (70.17%)

Rejected = 61 (0.19%)

Turnout = 31,835 (27.8%)


About the Referendum 

A national referendum on the voting system for the UK Parliament took place on Thursday 5 May 2011.

The referendum asked the public whether the system for electing MPs to the UK Parliament should change from the current system, which is first past the post, to the Alternative Vote.


Key dates for your diary 

  • Thursday 14 April 2011 (midnight) - Deadline for Registration
  • Thursday 14 April 2011 (5pm) - Deadline for applications, amendments or cancellations of postal votes and proxy amendments or cancellations.
  • Thursday 21 April 2011 (5pm) - Deadline to apply to vote by proxy.
  • Friday 6 May 2011 - Counting of Referendum ballot papers starts at 4pm.
