Exclusion is when a pupil is not allowed to attend school for a fixed term or permanently. A decision to exclude a pupil permanently should be taken only:
- (a) In response to serious breaches of the school's behaviour policy; and
- (b) If allowing the pupil to remain in school would seriously harm the education or welfare of the pupil or others in the school
Fixed term exclusions
This is a period of time when the Head of a school can use their legal power to ban a child from school premises. This can be from a half day up to 45 days in a school year.
Permanent exclusions
This is when the Head of a school can use their legal power to ban a child from school on a permanent basis.
