Biodiversity

Biodiversity encompasses all of the world's plants and animals and the habitats they live in.

This borough has a number of important habitats for sustaining biodiversity including gardens and allotments, rivers and reed beds, and grassland. We have over 30 Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation in this borough. The borough is also home to the black poplar - a rare and endangered species of tree.

The council along with other organisations are:

  • Enhancing biodiversity
  • Completing the borough's biodiversity strategy - the Local Biodiversity Action Plan
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement in line with Mayor's Biodiversity Strategy
  • Developing the Biodiversity Partnership
  • Ensuring that biodiversity is protected and/or enhanced in new developments, through design solutions such as open space, planting of native species, and green roofs
  • Linking in the Thames Gateway Green Grid network
  • Working with partners to raise awareness and educating the community on biodiversity issues
