Trading Standards

Welcome to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Trading Standards Services.

The service protects the interests of local consumers (residents) and provides advice to local businesses (traders), however others seeking information are free to browse this site no matter where you live.

Trading Standards, generally provide advice to local businesses on consumer law, investigate consumer complaints, and prosecute when necessary.

Aims

We aim to:

Follow legal enforcement procedures and guidelines
Assist and advise businesses to help them stay within the law and reduce the cost of compliance
Take into account the collective as well as individual interests of consumers and businesses, within the community
Maintain systems to ensure local and national consistency in our enforcement activities, including when there is a shared enforcement role
Ensure that our actions are proportionate to the risk and undertaken without undue delay. Where delays are inevitable we will endeavour when appropriate to keep parties informed
Act in a helpful and courteous manner

Actions

When necessary our actions may also include:

Seizing of goods
Suspending goods from sale
Issue notices
Publicising issues that have community impact
Seeking forfeiture of illegal goods and/or having the ownership of such goods assigned to the Trading Standards Service for disposal
Obtaining warrants for search or entry when required
