General housing information

Squatters and unauthorised occupants

A squatter is a person who occupies land or property to which they have no legal title.

Empty Council properties are usually awaiting repair, redecoration or re-letting and we are keen to ensure they stay empty so that someone on the waiting list has the opportunity to find a home.

If you live in a council property and you see anyone who appear to be squatting in a property, please contact us on 020 8215 3000 to report it and we will deal with the situation.

Please remember that squatters do have legal rights and to use force to remove them from a property is illegal.
