Publications 

We have a large number of local history publications available for sale in our libraries. They are also available to order online (postage and packing chargeable) details of how to order are on this page.

Most books and publications excluding postcards are half price.

Postcards 

A  selection of local views on postcards are also available. Please see the Publications and Postcard order form for the titles available.  ( Please note there are limited copies of some postcards)

To order any postcards email libraries@lbbd.gov.uk or use the list as an order form indicating which postcards you want and the number of copies. This can be emailed to libraries@lbbd.gov.uk or posted to the address on the form.

We will contact you, usually by email to advise you of the total cost of your order including postage (normally 2nd class) and packing.

Don't forget to provide a mailing address. On receipt of payment the postcards will be sent out with an invoice.

For the benefit of overseas customers, our administration prefers to deal in pounds sterling, but please ask if this is not convenient.

Old Ordnance Survey Maps

Facsimiles of old Ordnance Survey maps of the area published by Alan Godfrey Maps can be purchased at all borough libraries and at Valence House Museum.

All titles include an essay on the history of the area and extracts from a contemporary directory.

A catalogue may be requested from the Alan Godfrey Maps website. Other areas of the country are also published.

The Maps are highly detailed, taken from the 1/2,500 plans and reprinted at about 14 inches to the mile.

They cover towns in great detail, showing individual houses, railway tracks, factories, churches, mills, canals, tramways and even minutiae such as dockside cranes, fountains, signal posts, pathways, sheds and wells.
