Working together to provide excellent eye care services for local people

03/07/2012
More than 2,000 Barking and Dagenham residents are set to benefit from an innovative partnership which prevents avoidable sight loss and provides support services for blind and partially sighted people.

Barking and Dagenham is one of a few boroughs in London with a cross agency approach to dealing with the eye care needs of its residents - The Barking and Dagenham Vision Strategy.

The strategy was developed by a group, led by the Council, and brings to together, Doctors, health service managers, Opticians, charity organisations, local people and council officers.

The Barking and Dagenham Vision poster was last month judged the best out of 33 other entries at the Vision 2020 UK Conference. The poster showcased work we are doing in Barking and Dagenham to prevent avoidable sight loss and provide excellent support services for blind and partially sighted people.

Councillor Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Health said: “I am very pleased that we were awarded first place in the poster competition because, not only is this recognition of the hard work that we have done locally, but this will also provide much need publicity around important eye health message and the services that are available.

“Eye health is closely related to general health and keeping fit and reduces the chances of sight loss.  It is also important to have regular sight tests and this is particularly important for older people, people who are diabetic and people with a history of glaucoma in the family.

“Everyone should have an eye test at a high street optician once every two years.  Opticians do not just prescribe glasses but also identify conditions that require medical treatment, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.”
